Your Opportunity:

Under the direction of Manager, Software & Enterprise Systems, the Database Administrator is responsible for the active management of Okanagan College’s Databases and support of associated applications. Responsibilities include support of systems development from the design phase through to delivery and management of the systems hosting the designated Databases and related applications; and performs other related duties as required.

 

Education and Experience:

  • A 4-year university degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Six years and up to and including 8 years of progressive directly related experience.

 

Functions and Duties:

  1. Manages the structure and content of the various Databases.
  2. Monitors and manages Databases and Operating Systems to maximize application performance.
  3. Formally plans and schedules upgrades to the Databases and the applications residing within them in conjunction with operational and user staff. Formally plans and schedules upgrades to the operating systems hosting the Databases.
  4. Formally documents all changes to Database structure, gaining appropriate sign-off.
  5. Develops design, coding, and testing applications for planned system enhancements, codes, tests, and readies for implementation of the recurring system changes, including data integration processes with other systems, to ensure seamless flow of information, as well as recurring jobs for data synchronization and reporting.
  6. Formally documents each stage of the design, coding, testing, implementation, and change process, gaining appropriate sign-off at each stage.
  7. Uses agreed coding standards in the development of systems; recommends changes to standards.
  8. Participates in the determination of management information system’s needs, coordination of user requirements, and development of an overall management system plan.
  9. Participates in the ongoing maintenance of a strategic plan, development of detailed specifications, and the selection and acquisition or development for computerized management information systems.
  10. Participates in and provides advice to implementation teams for specific management information systems projects.
  11. Provides effective administration and operation of SQL Databases and supporting operating systems in support of management information systems, ensuring high availability and performance, through regular performance tuning, troubleshooting, and proactive monitoring of Database systems.
  12. Ensures that security procedures are maintained and followed with respect to Databases, operating systems, management information systems and user data.
  13. Participates in the provision of training and support for users of management information systems. This includes the development and maintenance of manuals, documentation, and operating instructions.
  14. Participates in the planning and installation of computing facilities, Databases, and operating systems required to support management information systems.
  15. Participates in the coordination of Okanagan College Management Information System activities with the activities of other Colleges and Institutions, Centre for Education Information Standards and Services, software vendors and in the management of standards and vendor contracts.
  16. Provides technical expertise, advice and consultation to peers and others, including senior managers of the organization, regarding Database systems and management information systems.
  17. Actively engages in training activities and courses in order to maintain technical currency.
  18. Performs other related duties as required.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Relational Database Administration.
  • Proficiency in SQL query development and fine-tuning.
  • Experience with data integration and daily job management.
  • Ability to manage database backups and restorations.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency in PL/SQL jobs and Operating System scripting.
  • Experience supporting Ellucian Banner ERP upgrades and the installation, configuration and validation of new modules and underlying data.
  • Data Lake implementation and operations.
  • Familiarity with administrating both on-prem and Cloud hosted Databases.
  • Experience in AWS Relational Database Service & Backups, and Non-SQL Databases

Schedule:

Monday – Friday: 8:00am – 4:00pm (negotiable)

 

 

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate:

$64,100 – $73,200. NOTE: In addition to the annual salary, a $10,000 annual labour market stipend applies to this position.
