Research & Communications Projects at Symphony Tourism Services
Open to Independent Contractors, Freelancers and Companies/Agencies

Objective: To provide research insights and communications tools for the regional destination management organizations (Tourism Vancouver Island, Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, Northern BC Tourism Association, Kootenay Rockies Tourism Association, Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association) of the BC Regional Tourism Secretariat (BCRTS). The purpose of the projects is to help provide real-time information, timely data, communicated in a way that is useful and comprehensible by small tourism businesses that make up the tourism industry in British Columbia. The aim for our research program is to help tourism businesses adapt, survive and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and contribute to their long term resilience.
Contracts Available: Symphony Tourism Services is looking for 2-3 contractors to provide services to fulfill three distinct, but related, projects related to research insights.
Project Contract 1: Research Analysis & Synthesis
Purpose: To provide research analysis and synthesis of data, acting as an advisor and collaborator with the Managing Director of Symphony Tourism Services, Research Specialist, and contracted Communications Specialist/Agency to enable the creation of succinct research summaries, presentations and communications tools. The purpose of the research synthesis is to enable the creation of communications tools to better aid tourism businesses throughout BC served by the BCRTS to be able to utilize timely data in adaptation and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Scope of Work: Review of all types of research reports available for each of the five regions (hotel performance data, market segmentation, visitor origins, visitation patterns, visitor spend). See example set of research sources for Thompson Okanagan region here. Synthesize important key findings from each to form a comprehensive story for each region, to be communicated via presentations and communications tools for tourism operators.
Format: Written research summaries by topic for each region. To be discussed with Symphony and creative contractors for ease of adaptation to communications tools.
Timeline: Review of reports, discussions with BCRTS partners on regional needs to refine summary content, and drafts to be completed in September; final research summaries delivered in October.
Pricing: Pricing should be fee for service for either days with number of days estimated or fee per deliverable of five (5) regional research summaries.
Project Contract 2: Communication Tool Design
Purpose: To provide communications tools using creative design techniques to visualize data and create compelling, clear, succinct and practical tools for small tourism businesses, custom for five (5) BC regional DMOs, to comprehend and optimally utilize timely data from various sources in order to adapt and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Data to be synthesized by contracted Research Analyst and supervised by Symphony Tourism Services Managing Director.
Scope of Work: Creation of a set of communications tools – documents, how-to guides, or other method of communication to be determined at outset of project. Approximately five (5) how-to guide documents to be produced. Collaboration with the Research Analyst and Managing Director on content and style will be a key part of the process. Creative, clear visuals that display data and instructions on how to use the data in a compelling manner, easy to interpret will be essential. Guidance to be provided by Symphony team and BCRTS partners.
Format: For use in presentations and print form. Format to be discussed with end clients. Canva, Adobe In Design, or other formats as suggested by designer/agency.
Timeline: Content development and design to be completed in September. Delivery in October of completed outputs.
Pricing: Pricing should be fee for service for either days with number of days estimated or fee per deliverable of data communications tools/guides.
Project Contract 3: Presentation Design
Purpose: To use creative design techniques to create five (5) compelling, clear, succinct and practical slide presentations from various sources of information. The purpose of the presentations is for the regional DMOs of the BCRTS to be well-equipped to communicate timely data to stakeholders, to better aid tourism businesses in adaptation and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Data content for presentations to be synthesized by contracted Research Analyst and supervised by Symphony Tourism Services Managing Director.
Scope of Work: Creation of five (5) slide presentations for CEO delivery at Annual General Meetings and other speaking engagements. Collaboration with the Research Analyst and Managing Director on content and style will be a key part of the process. Team to work together to confirm one template format to be adapted for all regions. Creative, clear visuals that display data in a compelling manner, easy to interpret will be essential. Guidance to be provided by Symphony team.
Format: For use in online presentations and for print reporting. Format to be discussed with end clients. May be in Powerpoint, Google Slides, Canva or other format.
Timeline: Presentation slide decks to be complete by the end of September, 2021. Exact dates for each of the five presentations to be provided. Work completion in September for this project is critical.
Pricing: Pricing should be fee for service for either days with number of days estimated or fee per deliverable of five designed presentations.
How to Apply
Contract and payment terms: Service contract to be issued at time of approval. 50% payment on signing of contract; 50% upon completion.
